Roles and Responsibilities
Board Members
Responsibilities
- Contributes to a positive image of Brotherhood events, membership and culture at all times
- Helps/guides/mentors all brotherhood members
- Always presents himself as a mensch
- Provides input and ideas for brotherhood events calendar
Expectations
- Attends most Brotherhood board meetings
- Attends a large percentage of brotherhood events
- If he cannot attend a brotherhood event he provides advanced notice to the President, EVP or Lisa to ensure there is at least some board coverage for every event
- Proactively reaches out for help AND to help with all brotherhood functions
- Never says “no” to help with the brotherhood. Even if they can’t be at a specific event or provide a specific service, a member can find other ways to help out, provide guidance, or help ensure support is available if they can’t provide it themselves
- Help with Sunday morning Hebrew school bagels, hot dogs and parking at least 2x a school year
- Attend at least 1 Friday night service every 3 months as a representative member of the brotherhood
President (or Co-Presidents)
Responsibilities
- Oversees the general health and well-being of the Brotherhood
- Facilitator/enabler for all other board positions
- Facilitator of Brotherhood board meetings – responsible for ensuring every meeting has an agenda and minutes taken
- Spokesperson on behalf of the brotherhood at appropriate Synagogue board meetings
- Spokesperson on behalf of the brotherhood at Synagogue functions e.x. Services announcements
- Final decision maker (with other President if applicable) and consulting with clergy
- Ensures that responsibilities/expectations for other board positions are being met/accomplished by all other board members
- Will be a sitting member of the board of trustees
- Will have a term limit of 3 years
Expectations
- Ensures there is participation from brotherhood board for all brotherhood functions (must reasonably attempt to attend as many brotherhood functions as possible)
- Sets the table and sets the tone for how the brotherhood runs/works
- Checks in with event planners and helps out for events whenever asked
Executive Vice President
Responsibilities
- Keeps the brotherhood event calendar up to date
- Is “the right-hand man” for event planners i.e. helps and guides event planners to create successful events
- Fills in for the Presidents if/when needed and as needed
- Guides and supports communications, programing, membership and at large positions
- Actively works to learn the role of Presidency (expected to be the next acting President)
Expectations
- Ensures there is participation from brotherhood board for all brotherhood functions (must reasonably attempt to attend as many brotherhood functions as possible)
- Ensures that event planning guidelines are being followed/met
- Checks in regularly with communications, programing, membership positions
- Checks in regularly with event planners
Treasurer
Responsibilities
- Responsible for all brotherhood finances
- Keeps accurate bookkeeping of all Brotherhood transactions
- Keeps in contact with synagogue bookkeeper and executive director to ensure finances are accurate and in-flows/out-flows are accounted for effectively
- Responsible for forecasting brotherhood budget
- Maintains relationship with bank
Expectations
- Provides financial update during brotherhood board meetings
- Communicates budget and planning with EVP on a regularly basis
- Works with membership to ensure brotherhood accurately receives membership dues
- Works with synagogue bookkeeper to ensure brotherhood funds that are paid to the Synagogue accurately end up in the Brotherhood bank account
Secretary/Historian
Responsibilities
- Records brotherhood meeting notes and action items
- Ensure pictures/videos are being captured at events
- Follows up with VPs/EVP to ensure action items are not forgotten
Expectations
- Provides great notes for board meetings
- Works with Lisa/Jon Carrol to ensure pictures/videos are effectively saved
Communications/Membership
Responsibilities
- Drives brotherhood membership
- Answers or finds answers for brotherhood member’s questions.
- Contacts all new SHM Temple members and invites them to become a trial member of brotherhood. This is done by email or phone.
- Enabler for brotherhood advertisements and communications in conjunction with SHM Ads.
- Collaborates with Lisa and SHM Staff on membership numbers and communication
Expectations
- Ensures all events have effective communication
Program Chair
Responsibilities
- Ensures all brotherhood events are setup for success.
- Ensure that the proper paperwork has been submitted to SHM in a timely manner.
- Along with the board ensures that each event has a specified event planner
- Ensures that event planning guidelines are followed for all events
Expectations
- Helps ensure that all events will be successful
- Communicates any risks/issues for events that need to be mitigated
At Large
Responsibilities
- Jack of all trades/helper where/when needed
Expectations
- Oversees general communications and offers support / suggestions from past experiences.
Past Board Presidents
- Groomed to hold a brotherhood board position on a future slate
